Master Debators

Ok, I just wanted to use that title for a post.

I don't generally watch debates. I also don't pay attention to the political ads prior to an election. I find that anyone who bases their voting on these is woefully uninformed. You have to look deeper into a candidate's history than the dog and pony show, that is an election.
Debates are basically just infomercials for both candidates. They rarely answer any questions, except to sidestep it and launch into their talking points.

You know how, in football, whenever there is a big dogpile of players onto the ball? Nobody can tell who has posession, but both teams will start excitedly pointing in their direction to make it seem like they have somehow determined that their team has posession of the ball. This is done in the belief that it will somehow sway the refs into thinking with them.

That's how I see the debates. Both sides will 'commentate' to death that their candidate won the debate. This is especially the case when, like last night, there was no clear winner.

  • No clear winner? Are you high? It was like watching a tennis match between a club pro and a toddler -- when the toddler got it back over the net, you might think she did very well for a toddler but you wouldn't sign her up for the US Open. She only has a claim to performing well if you expected her to piss herself on-camera.

I'm biased, of course, but I also have been reviewing a lot of polling samples on this. The only people who think she did great are the Republican base, who were going to vote for her come hell or high water. The undecideds -- which is what counts at this point -- think Biden won by about a 2:1 margin.

I've taught a long time and seen a lot of student presentations from bad students who crammed hard. What you saw was a C student with two minutes' worth of material prepared bullshitting her way through a twenty minute presentation. Where's the spiel about the "soft bigotry of low expectations" now?

  • Got busy, but meant to come back and post this.

    CBS:

46% of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Joe Biden was the winner. 21% thought Sarah Palin won, 33% thought it was a draw.... 98% after the debate saw [Biden] as knowledgeable (79% before the debate).

    CNN: Poll

    51% Biden 36% Palin

If you got beat 51-36 in basketball, you didn't tie or even almost win. You got your ass kicked.

  • As I said, I don't watch debates.
    As you said, you're biased.

By 'no clear winner',I meant nobody stepped on their dick. There was no major screwup. I have seen rightwingers saying she 'stood her ground', or knocked it out of the park. Now, I've heard from the left (you) that she sucked.

Pretty much like I posted would happen.

  • I suppose McCain won this one too, right?

  • Believing polls would contradict my belief that the vast majority of people are idiots.
