I swear when I picture the staff at npr planning how to handle a story, I picture the biggest caricatures of rich, guilty, white, ivy-league liberals.

Their idea of "real Iowans" are the old dudes who hole up in a diner in Oskaloosa to play checkers and bitch about how much the Mexicans who do all the work for them suck because they want to be paid. I think NPR runs a national contest with their local affiliates where everyone is instructed to play "find the dumbass." It keeps people in the Eastern corridor feeling smug.
