George Orwell

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

George Orwell

Obviously, Orwell was brilliant. This quote of his summarizes, for me, the difference between liberals and everyone else. The idea that liberals don't seem to appreciate the realities of the world.

It shouldn't. I'm a card carrying Lib, and I am a Vietnam Era Vet. We serve, Ex, we just try to be prudent about starting wars.

    When did you serve again?

  • Lighten up, Francis. My point was the difference between the idealized world vs the concessions that are necessary in the real world.
Sure, we'd all think it'd be great to have free health care, but there's a very real cost that out weighs the benefits.

It's like communism (aka socialism, progressivism, collectivism). The most conservative person in the world still thinks it'd be great if we could all get along and be equal and sing kumbaya, but the reality is that it just doesn't work.

Do you really think anybody wants to start a war? Now, we could argue all day about whether the cost is worth the benefits, etc. I suppose that falls back to what one considers "prudent". Then again, that also goes to long term (perceived) benefits vs short term costs.

We'd have to dedicate a whole blog to it.
