MACs

I just love this line:

"Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults; computers for scaredy cats too nervous to learn how proper computers work; computers for people who earnestly believe in feng shui."

  • Does it count if you know full well how proper computers work, but like a computer that both works and looks nice while at the same time is actually fun to use and not a pain in the ass?

And if Macs are so awful, why is Windows forever trying to rip off their OS? Just sayin...

  • You know, Kat, I thought of you when I posted that, because you're the only person I know that uses a Mac.

  • I use a Mac. My MacBook kicks ass and thanks to my edu discount, it was comparable in price to a clone with software and features that weren't nearly as good. I can also program in seven dead or nearly dead computer languages, having been quite the nerd-girl back in the days of BBSes and Fortran. Really, when you've been a computer user since 1981, you pretty much have to know how to program. I know that there are some people who still swear by the whole IBM and clone thing, but honestly...the interfaces are incredibly clunky and not really good for doing what I need to do with my computer. I guess it's just about picking the right tool for the job.

  • Yeah. What she said.

    suck it. ;=p

  • Tell me again about the punch cards, grandma.

    Fortran. Good lord, you're old.

There were a couple of fossils, during my first year of college, that were still pushing Fortran as a required computer language.

No, Bridgett, it doesn't surprise me in the least that YOU would prefer a MAC.

    SMOOCH!

  • I have the dubious distinction of receiving a nerdy love letter consisting of a stack of punch cards. Sad but true.

My undergrad college was an early leader in programming (an edge that they've long since lost) and there were a lot of hardcore mainframers that thought you had to learn Fortran before you could master anything else...which was utterly wrongheaded and useless, as was much of my college education. In looking over their curriculum, I see they STILL offer classes in Fortran, COBOL, C, and C++. In-fucking-credible. They also offer a whole class on debugging.

On the whole, I'd rather skip the advanced degree in crapology and use a Mac.

  • I still see a lot of applications in C and C++, but COBOL and Fortran have gone the way of the Dodo.
